Brownbag Lectures: Exploring Abe's River...the Sangamon
- Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
- Date: Wednesday, February 18, 2015, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Presented by Kent L. Massie, PLA/ASLA, Massie Massie & Associates, Springfield, Illinois
While working on a trail planning study of the Sangamon River, Kent Massie explored the history of the river and discovered some interesting things about the area and especially the role the river had in Lincoln’s prairie years. The recent study was for the IL Department of Natural Resources to determine if the Sangamon River could be a National Water Trail to honor the 50th anniversary of the Lincoln Heritage Canoe Trail designated by Governor Otto Kerner in 1965. Highlights of the corridor study will be presented hopefully generating discussion about the future of the Sangamon River and the role it might play in adding to our area’s tourism and recreation opportunities.
