Physicians-in-training (residents) can lose compassion for, and understanding of, their patients as residents attempt to master their chosen profession.To combat this lack of understanding and compassion, resident physicians at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine participated in an interactive poverty simulation designed to: (a) teach them the issues facing people living in poverty, (b) help them understand the issues that prevent patients from being compliant, and (c) help them become more compassionate toward the poor and poverty-stricken. In the last half of the 19th century, “proper” American homes became showrooms for hand-made ornamental objects that by today’s standards of interior decoration are curious, foreign and obsessive.Portieres,lambrequins and antimacassars were commonplace in parlors, and objects made from feathers, seeds and even human hair garnered admiration.Jim Zimmer delves into this period by examining the underlying causes and influences for the proliferation of American “home arts” and shares the diverse manifestation of Victorian fancywork and household elegancies.
