Spectrum Exhibition Opening Night (Open to the Public)

  • Location: Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Springfield
  • Date: Thursday, September 03, 2015, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

New Exhibition Open at the Illinois State Museum Springfield Gallery (Aug. 14 - Sept. 25, 2015). The Spectrum exhibition features a sampling of the broad range of art and artifacts found in the Illinois State Museum’s collections of fine and decorative art. The works selected by ISM curators bear witness to the rich cultural history of Illinois since it became a state in 1818. Paintings, textiles, sculpture, works on paper, and other objects represent a variety of media and subject matter. Some are recent acquisitions and others are rarely seen gems, such as a grouping of paintings that started the Illinois State Museum’s fine art collection back in 1928.

“It would be impossible to characterize the entire scope of the Illinois State Museum’s collection of fine and decorative arts in a single exhibition,” says Jim Zimmer, Director for Art and History. “The Spectrum exhibition, however, provides a satisfying glimpse of a unique, Illinois-focused collection to which artists and patrons have donated and entrusted their prized objects for eighty-seven years.”

Opening Night. An opening for this special exhibition will be held Thursday, September 3 and will be open to the public from 6-7:30PM. No refreshments will be served. In the meantime, we invite visitors to investigate the rich history of the varied and storied fine and decorative arts collection of the Illinois State Museum. Be engaged and inspired by concept, humor, fine skill and craft, family heirlooms, and the talent discovered in our state throughout the years. Each room explores a different genre, and a different time, of the spectrum of work made in Illinois.
