Super Saturdays at the Museum: Down on the Farm

  • Location: Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Springfield
  • Date: Saturday, August 08, 2015, 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

In Illinois, farmland is all around us. Come learn about agriculture as we discover where food comes from, how food travels to our grocery stores, and different ways to enjoy food. Activities will include decorating a farmers’ market bag, milking a “cow,” discovering how hamburgers and sweet corn make it to our table, making butter, and a cooking demo provided by genH Kids.

Down on the Farm Super Saturday is a part of Springfield’s celebration of National Farmers Week, which runs August 2nd – 8th. National Farmers Market Week events in Springfield are brought to you by Illinois Stewardship Alliance, a statewide non-profit organization supporting local food and sustainable agriculture, in partnership with the Chatham Public Library, Downtown Springfield, Inc., Food Fantasies, genHkids, Grow Springfield, HSHS St. John's Hospital, Illinois Department of Agriculture, Illinois Farmers Market Association, Robert's Seafood, and U of I Extension.

Bring the whole family to Super Saturdays at the Illinois State Museum! Super Saturdays are held the 2nd Saturday of each month from 11am-3pm and offer free, thematic activities recommended for children ages 3-8. Activities take 30 to 45 minutes to complete and feature crafts and educational games. Parents and families are encouraged to participate. Registration is not required for this activity. Free and open to the public. For more information, call the Education Section at (217) 782-5955. The Super Saturday series is sponsored by Bank of Springfield.
