Amazing Agriculture Family Event

  • Location: Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Springfield
  • Date: Saturday, June 28, 2014, 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Amazing Agriculture

Now, more than ever, it’s important for kids and families to understand not only what they are eating, but where their food comes from. On June 28, from 11AM to 3PM visitors to the Illinois State Museum will explore this idea at the “Amazing Agriculture” family event. Fun and educational activities will include a sweet corn farm-to-table relay, fruit and vegetable painting, and seed planting. Families will learn where hamburgers come from, Illinois’ major crops (beyond corn and soy beans), and will be able to visit with exhibitors from genHkids, the St. Louis Dairy Council, and Sangamon and Menard County Master Gardeners. Local beekeeper, Arvin Pierce, will have a demonstration hive with live bees, as well as other beekeeping equipment. Free and open to the public.

Activities

  • Planting Activity: Children will plant green bean seeds in soil to take home.
  • Fruit & Veggie Painting: Children will use cut fruits and vegetables as stamps to create a unique work of art. These fruits and vegetables will also be available for taste testing.
  • Farm-to-Table Relay: During the course of this relay, children will “plant” sweet corn seeds, harvest ears of corn from corn stalks, and take them to the “market,” where they will be purchased and taken to the table for dinner.
  • What’s in a Hamburger?: This flannel board display will allow children to “build” their own gigantic hamburger and learn what kinds of ingredients go into a hamburger or veggie burger with all the fixin’s.
