Brownbag Lectures: Diagnosing the Whole Patient: Using Poverty Simulation to Help Residents See Beyond Medical Issues

Physicians-in-training (residents) can lose compassion for, and understanding of, their patients as residents attempt to master their chosen profession.To combat this lack of understanding and compassion, resident physicians at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine participated in an interactive poverty simulation designed to: (a) teach them the issues facing people living in poverty, (b) help them understand the issues that prevent patients from being compliant, and (c) help them become more compassionate toward the poor and poverty-stricken.

Using an 18-item Poverty Scale given before and immediately after the simulation, as well as nine months later, the half-day simulation had a positive impact and significantly increased the residents’ understanding of, and compassion for, people in poverty. Understanding the barriers in a patient’s life can help forge a patient-physician partnership that leads to mutual understanding and improved patient health.

One of our Brownbag Lectures

Weekly lectures held at the Museum's Research and Collections Center. Lectures are usually held during lunchtime on Wednesday. The RCC is located at 1011 E. Ash Street in Springfield. Access to the building is from 10 ½ Street (between Ash and Laurel Streets), where there is ample visitor parking in the west parking lot. For more information, please call 217-785-0037.
