Brownbag Lectures: Five Years at Morton Village: What Have We Learned?

Brownbag Lectures: Five Years at Morton Village: What Have We Learned?

  • Location: ISM Research & Collections Center, Springfield
  • Date: Wednesday, April 24, 2013, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Presented by Michael Conner, Ph.D., Associate Curator of Anthropology, ISM Dickson Mounds Museum

The summer of 2012 marked the fifth season of excavations at the Morton Village site by Dickson Mounds Museum and Michigan State University. Preliminary analysis of data obtained in the last five years and from excavations in the 1980s indicates that the site was the scene of a multicultural occupation with producers of both Oneota and Mississippian ceramics living contemporaneously in the same village in the mid 1300s. This conclusion is based on the distribution of ceramics in structures and radiocarbon dates. Spatial patterns in the distribution of house types and ceramics are also starting to emerge. There is evidence of significant ceremonialism at the site, as indicated by one structure with unique architecture and a pit in another structure with possible feasting remains (6 kg of fauna from  more than 20 species) and an unusual array of artifacts.
