Art Detective Family Fun at the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery to Celebrate Lockport Old Canal Days

LOCKPORT— Celebrate Old Canal Days at the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery by helping to solve the mystery of the Great Canal Caper on Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and 17, 2012, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Participants will aid Nancy DRAW and the ARTy Boys in uncovering clues and decoding secret messages to help solve the crime.  Each family will be given a printed guide which will lead them around the gallery to discover clues through the artworks of the Focus 4 exhibition.  “Art detectives” who successfully solve the crime will be awarded a participation packet and a balloon, and their names will be entered in daily drawings for art detective kits.  This free activity is open to the public and is designed for families with children of all ages.

The Great Canal Caper is sponsored by the Lockport Rotary Club.  This event intertwines history, the visual arts, and education into a fun family activity.  It is presented as one of many events this year to commemorate ISM Lockport Gallery’s 25th Anniversary year.

The Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery will be open extended hours for this event.  The gallery will be open 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, June 16, and Sunday, June 17 during the Lockport Old Canal Days festival for the Great Canal Caper activity and for viewing of the Focus 4 exhibition.  Admission is free.

The current exhibition, Focus 4: Four Solo Exhibitions (thru October 5th) features the work of four Illinois artists: Steven Robnett, Don Seiden, Mario Trejo, and Rebecca Wolfram. Elgin artist Robnett narrates the human experience from multiple perspectives in tightly rendered paintings and compositions of charcoal, pastel, and colored pencil. Seiden—Chicago-based painter, sculptor, and art therapist with more than 50 years experience—explores life, art, and the creative process utilizing mixed media.  Southern Illinois artist Trejo combines rigorous processes and acute attention to detail in compositions that resonate between calm fluidity and struggling chaos. Chicago-based painter Wolfram delves into the effects of culture, custom, and tradition as they reflect and shape social behavior and society.

The Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery is located on the first floor of the historic Norton Building at 201 West 10th Street in Lockport, Illinois, and is fully accessible to all physically challenged individuals.  Regular museum hours are noon until 5:00 pm on Sunday and 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  The Museum is closed Saturdays and State Holidays.  Admission is free.  For information on exhibitions and related programs, becoming a member of the Friends of the Lockport Gallery, directions to the museum, or to schedule a group tour of ten or more, please contact museum staff at (815) 838-7400 or visit the museum online at https://www.museum.state.il.us/ismsites/lockport/.  The Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery is part of the Illinois State Museum system, including sites in Springfield, Rend Lake, Chicago, and Lewistown.
