  Eagle Day Festival   

Lewistown, IL -- Family-friendly Eagle Day events will be held at a variety of venues all day in Havana, Lewistown, the Emiquon Preserve, and Dickson Mounds Museum on Saturday, February 8, 2014.  Admission is free at all of the events.

 At Dickson Mounds museum from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. activities will be available for kids in the museum’s Discovery Center.  Make a falcon mask or an Eagle hat.  One may also explore exhibits created by the Forbes, Illinois River, and Therkildsen Field Stations and learn about identification and biological fun facts about eagles.  See mussels, fish specimens, and other animal mounts.  See what also inhabits our world through a microscope.  At 9:30 a.m., Dickson Mounds will present the Eagle Art and Poetry Awards ceremony.  Winners of this year’s competition will be honored during this ceremony.

World Bird Sanctuary of Missouri will present Raptor Awareness, a one-hour program with live birds of prey, at 11:00 a.m. and a second show at 1:00 p.m.  Admission is free, but tickets must be picked up in the lobby of the Museum for the show as seating is limited to 150.

 The Fulton and Mason County Arts Councils will sell food for lunch, the proceeds of which will fund their respective programs.
 
The Nature Conservancy's Emiquon Preserve Visitor Use Observatories will be open for hiking, snow shoeing and cross country skiing (conditions permitting) and will have available spotting scopes for eagle and bird watching, hot cocoa, a warming station and visitor information.  Activities and parking will be in the boat launch parking area located directly off state route 78/97.  Chautauqua Wildlife Refuge will host an auto tour around the South Pool from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.  Refuge staff will be on hand at the Headquarters to greet visitors and answer questions.

Be sure to also visit the new Lewistown Visitor Center on the 8th. From 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.  Wildlife Prairie Park’s Birds of Prey up Close will provide visitors an opportunity to see a variety of birds such as hawks, eagles, and owls.

 At the Havana Nature Center visitors will also have a great opportunity to see eagles along the river and there be activities for kids between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.  And don’t forget the Eagle Plunge at the Illinois River at 1:00 p.m.

This event, which is co-sponsored by Dickson Mounds, The Nature Conservancy, US Fish & Wildlife Service, UIS Therkildsen Field Station, Illinois Natural History Survey, Fulton and Mason County Arts Councils, Havana and Lewistown Chambers, Havana Public Library District and Nature Center, and Emiquon Audubon Society.
