IVAS Lecture: The Archaeology of Dickson Mounds

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Tuesday, November 01, 2016, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Dr. Alan Harn, Curator Emeritus, Dickson Mounds Museum, will present the talk “The Archaeology of Dickson Mounds” at the Tuesday, November 1, 2016, meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society. The presentation begins at 7:00 p.m. at Dickson Mounds Museum. This lecture is free and the public is invited to attend the lecture and the refreshments following.

In 1927, Dr. Don F. Dickson, a chiropractor, began the scientific excavation of an American Indian mound in his father’s back yard that would forever change the complexion of American archaeology.  Leaving the 281 burials and accompanying grave offerings in place for public viewing, his in situ exhibit and museum would be a catalyst that first brought “new age” professional archaeologists to the Illinois Country and later would inspire legions of people to becomes students of the American Indian. The listener will be invited to step back in time, via imagery, to witness many of the dramatic changes that took place as Late Woodland and Mississippian cultures met, exchanged ideas and eventually blended together on the bluff now known as Dickson Mounds.

The Illinois State Museum—Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations. For more information call 309.547.3721 or TTY 217.782.9175 or visit the museum's web site at www.ExperienceEmiquon.com.
