Hickory Ridge Concert Series: Alaskan Fiddler - Ken Waldman

Hickory Ridge Concert Series: Alaskan Fiddler - Ken Waldman

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Saturday, September 17, 2016, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The Hickory Ridge Concert Series welcomes Alaska's Fiddling Poet Ken Waldman to the Dickson Mounds Museum this Saturday, September the 17th at 7:00 pm.  Waldman is an accomplished fiddle player and imaginative composer of new tunes. His performances are as close to traditional fiddle styles as you can get, with a down-to-earth presentation and a stylistic purity that harkens back to the days of old time players like Fiddlin' John Carson.

Waldman performs in the tradition of the late John Hartford and draws on on his 30 years in Alaska to produce poems, stories, and fiddle tunes that combine into a performance uniquely his.  Ken started playing fiddle in 1981 and has toured full time since 1995.  His unique blend of Appalachian string music, original poetry, and humor have taken him to some of the nation's leading universities, festivals, arts centers, and clubs.   But what distinguishes Ken is that he uses this music in performance as backdrop as he shares original poems and tells stories about this music. He has been described as a living soundtrack to an American epic.

For more than 20 years, people have gathered at Dickson Mounds on the third Saturday of every month for an evening of musical entertainment.  Hosted by Chris Vallillo, an accomplished musician and performer in his own right, the Hickory Ridge Concert Series features Roots/Folk music and other genres offered by a talented variety of performers.  Add an intermission with refreshments and an opportunity to visit with the performers, and you have a rare opportunity to appreciate music in an intimate coffeehouse environment.  Concerts begin at 7 p.m. and there is an $8 fee for adults and $5 for youngsters under 12. For more information call 309/547-3721 or TDD 217/782-9175.
