  Artifact Identification Day

Artifact Identification Day

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Sunday, March 01, 2015, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Dickson Mounds Museum will host the 33rd Annual Artifact Identification Day on Sunday, March 1, 2015 between 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Museum archaeologists and other experts will identify, but not appraise, Native American artifacts, both prehistoric and historic pieces, and other objects such fossils, bones, and rock specimens.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their curiosities and questions. Museum archaeologists will be available to identify Native American tools, pottery, and points. Also on hand will be Dr. Jonathan Reyman, Illinois State Museum, who will be examining ethnographic items. Dr. Terrance Martin, Illinois State Museum, will be available to identify animal bone. Tom Styles will identify rock and minerals. And, Dr. Chris Widga will be available to look at paleontological specimens. Members of the local flint knapping club will be at the Museum to demonstrate the ancient technique of shaping chipped stone tools as part of the coinciding Knap-In Weekend event.

A collection of Mississippian period diggings tools, also called hoes, will be featured at Dickson Mounds Museum’s annual artifact identification day. The late Quinton Ritchey collected more than 50 of these large (some more than 12” long), distinctively shaped, bifacially chipped tools during his travel throughout southern Illinois while working in the oil business.

Admission to the event is free, but donations are welcome.
