Second Sunday Science Series: The Science of Climate Change

Second Sunday Science Series: The Science of Climate Change

  • Location: ISM Dickson Mounds Museum, Lewistown
  • Date: Sunday, November 11, 2012, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Dr. Eric Grimm of the Illinois State Museum will speak on “The Science of Climate Change” at Dickson Mounds Museum on Sunday, November 11, 2012 as part of the Second Sunday Science Series sponsored by Dickson Mounds and the University of Illinois at Springfield Therkildsen Field Station.

Grimm will discuss the major climate and vegetation changes in Illinois since the last Ice Age, how scientists reconstruct past vegetation and climate, the major natural and man-made drivers of climate change, and how these factors may affect our future climate. Especially critical now are human activities that have caused greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere to reach concentrations higher than any seen during the past 650,000 years, and probably much longer. Thus, global temperatures may rise to levels not seen for at least 2 million years.

Grimm is Curator and Chair of the Botany Section and Director of the Landscape History Program at the Illinois State Museum. In recent years, his research has centered on the vegetation and climate history of the upper Midwest and the northern Great Plains.

The lecture will be held Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dickson Mounds Museum auditorium. Admission is free.  Contact the Museum at 309-547-3721 for more information or with any questions.
