Class Bivalvia : Subclass Paleoheterodonta : Genus Venustaconcha

Venustaconcha ellipsiformis (Ellipse)
The shell of the ellipse mussel is small (to three inches) and solid. The green or greenish yellow surface is relatively smooth, with a few wrinkles posteriorly in older shells. This species lives in the gravel or mixed sand and gravel of small to medium streams. In Illinois it occurs in the northern half of the state.
Conservation status: Species of Special Concern in Illinois
