Tritogonia verrucosa (Pistolgrip)
The pistolgrip mussel shell is large (up to eight inches in length), thick, compressed, and elongate. The anterior end is rounded, while the posterior end is squared off. The shell is entirely covered with pustules. The surface is green or light brown, darkening with age. This species lives in the mud, sand, or gravel of medium to large rivers. It has occurred in all but the northeastern tip of Illinois.
