Genus Quadrula

Quadrula quadrula (Mapleleaf)
The mapleleaf mussel shell has distinctive bumps on the posterior end and in two rows down the surface, separated by a furrow. Otherwise, the shell is smooth, in colors from yellowish green to light brown. It grows to four inches in length. This species lives in the mud, sand, or gravel bottom of medium to large rivers. In Illinois it iccurs in all parts of the state except the Chicago area.
Conservation status: Widespread and common, it is a commercial species.
