Genus Quadrula

Class Bivalvia : Subclass Paleoheterodonta : Genus Quadrula

Quadrula pustulosa (Pimpleback)
The pimpleback mussel shell grows to four inches in length, is rounded, covered (posterior half) with knobs called pustules, and has a dark green stripe on the umbo. The surface color varies from yellowish green to light brown, darkening with age.
This species lives in the sand, mud, or gravel of medium to large rivers. It can be found throughout the state of Illinois.
Conservation status: widespread and relatlively common, it is a commercial species.
