Quadrula nodulata (Wartyback)
The wartyback mussel shell is characterized by two rows of knobs extending from the umbos to the ventral margin of the shell. The shell is relatively thick and rounded. The surface is yellowish green to light brown, darkening with age. This species lives in the sand or fine gravel of medium and large rivers. In Illinois is occurs along the Mississippi River from St. Louis northward, in the Illinois, Kaskaskia, Wabash, and Ohio River valleys. Conservation status: uncommon, but locally abundant Taxonomy: Order Unionoida; Superfamily Unionoidea; Family Unionidae; Subfamily Ambleminae
