Genus Pleurobema

Pleurobema plenum (Rough Pigtoe)
The rough pigtoe mussel shell is triangular in shape, thick, and inflated. The umbos are prominently inflated and elevated. The surface has a satin texture of yellowish brown. It grows to four inches in length. This species lives in the sand or gravel of medium to large rivers. It has occurred on the Wabash River in Illinois.
Conservation status: federally endangered
Taxonomy: Order Unionoida; Superfamily Unionoidea; Family Unionidae; Subfamily Ambleminae
