Genus Lampsilis

Class Bivalvia : Subclass Paleoheterodonta : Genus Lampsilis

Lampsilis ovata (Pocketbook)
The Pocketbook mussel has a rounded, inflated shell with a smooth, yellowish brown surface. There is a sharply angled posterior ridge. It grows to six inches in length.
This species lives in coarse sand or gravel in large rivers. In Illinois it occured along the Wabash and Ohio Rivers (far southeast edge of the state).
Conservation status: Possibly extirpated from Illinois.
Taxonomy: Order Unionoida, Superfamily Unionoidea, Family Unionidae, Subfamily Lampsilinae.
