Class Bivalvia : Subclass Paleoheterodonta : Genus Cyclonaias

Cyclonaias tuberculata (Purple Wartyback)
The purple wartyback mussel has a rounded, thick shell with a yellowish-green to brown surface. It grows to five inches in length. There are many wavy ridges across the umbo. The surface is covered with tubercles on the posterior three-quarters.
This species occurs in gravel or mixed sand and gravel in medium to large rivers throughout Illinois.
Conservation status: Threatened in Illinois.
Taxonomy: Order Unionoida, Superfamily Unionoidea, Family Unionidae, Subfamily Ambleminae.
