Vanessa cardui (Painted Lady)

The Painted Lady butterfly is orangy-tan with black and white spots. The wingspan is from 2.25 to 3 inches. It can be distinguished from the American Painted Lady by the absence of large eye-spots on the underside of the hindwing. There are four smaller brown eyespots instead, along with the white lacework pattern.

This migratory species lives in most open areas. It is found in all parts of Illinois, but does not survive the winter. It is also widespread throughout the world. Larval host plants include the aster family and legumes (over 100 known host plants). Adults drink nectar.
