Sporobolus heterolepis (Prairie Dropseed)
Prairie Dropseed grows to 2 1/2 feet tall in mesic prairies and on hill and rocky prairies. The dense tufts of grass have long narrow leaves that roll lengthwise. Flowers are pinkish to blackish in branching clusters at the top of stems. Each flower produces a round seed. The plant flowers from midsummer to early fall. This specimen shows the root system.
