Silphium terebinthinaceum (Prairie Dock)
Prairie Dock is found in the eastern part of the tall grass prairie region, growing in deep-soil prairies and rocky sites. It grows from two to ten feet tall. The foliage consists of a cluster of huge, serrated, spade-shaped, basal leaves that have a rough upper surface texture. The dark, smooth, stem is almost leafless. At its top is one or more flower heads. Each head is made up of broad green bracts, in which are 12-25 yellow ray flowers that surround several disk flowers wlith protruding styles. It flowers from summer to fall.
