Mint (Lamiaceae)

ISM Herbarium : Prairie Herbs : Mint (Lamiaceae)

Monarda fistulosa (Wild Bergamot)
Wild Bergamot grows in prairie thickets, fields, and pastures. The branching, square stems reach five feet, as seen in this specimen. Leaves are opposite and reach to five inches in length and two inches in width, on a one-inch stalk. The flower is a round head surround by a whorl of leaflike bracts. There is a central brown disk ringed by lavender tubes (corollas) that have two lips, from which protrude two threadlike stamens, giving the flowers a fringed appearance. It blooms from late spring to early fall.
