Lithospermum canascens (Hoary Puccoon)
The common name Hoary refers to the hairs on the leaves that can make them look grey. Puccoon is a Native American word that refers to a reddish dye that can be made from this type of plant. Hoary Puccoon grows in mesic to dry prairies, upland savannas, and rocky soils. It is about 15 inches tall with several stems. The alternate leaves are narrow and smooth-edged. Flowers, which appear from spring to early summer, are about 1/2 inch wide and made up of five marrow petals and a lobed tubular corolla surround by five green sepals. Flowers are in small clusters.
