Liatris pycnostachya (Thick Spike Blazing Star)
Thick Spike Blazing Star grows to five feet tall in mesic to dry prairies. The basal leaves (not shown here) are long and grasslike. The stem leaves are narrow and short. Flowers are on a spike with purple flower heads consisting of five to ten small, lobed disk flowers and two threadlike styles. It blooms from midsummer to early fall.
