Ulmus rubra (Slippery Elm)
Slippery elm trees grow to 70 feet tall in moist soils of low slopes and floodplains, and also grows on dry uplands. This species' range extends from eastern South Dakota across southern Canada to Maine southward to northern Florida west to norhteast Texas.
The strongly veined green leaves are uneven-sided ellipses with saw-toothed margins. Bark is dark brown and furrowed. This specimen shows the small short-stalked flowers on the twigs. the fruits are round, flat winged keys containing one seed.
