Ulmus americana (American Elm)
The American elm grows in the eastern half of the United States where it has not been killed by Dutch Elm disease. it grows in moist soils of valleys and floodplains.
The simple asymmetrical oval leaves are saw-toothed and grow in two rows along the twigs. The upper side is roughly textured; the underside is paler and hairy. This specimen also shows the fruits, which are 3/8 to 1/2 inch long elliptical winged keys (notched at the tip).
