Linden (Tiliaceae)

ISM Herbarium : Trees : Linden (Tiliaceae)

Tilia americana (Basswood)
Basswood grows in the northeast quater of the United States. It grows to 100 feet tall and two to three feet in diameter in moist soils of valleys and uplands.
The shiny, dark green, stalked leaves are rounded, serrated, and taper to a point. The dark gray bark furrows into narrow ridges. Summer flowers (shown in this specimen) have five yellowish-white petals and hang in stalked clusters from a leafy bract.
