Bald Cypress (Taxodiaceae)

ISM Herbarium : Trees : Bald Cypress (Taxodiaceae)

Taxodium distichum (Bald Cypress)
Bald Cypress is a large, aquatic, deciduous needle-leaved tree that grows to 120 feet in very wet soils of riverbanks and floodplains where soil is submerged part of the year. It grows in the southeastern United States from from southern Illinois to Texas in the west to the south Atlantic coast from Florida to Delaware.
The 3/8" to 3/4" needle-like leaves grow in two rows along the twigs, creating a feathery appearance. The tree's bark is made up of dark brown or gray ridges that peel off. The scale-covered cones (shown in this specimen)are round and gray at the end of twigs. Under each scale are two three-angled seeds.
