Quercus montana (Rock Chestnut Oak)
Rock chestnut oak grows from 60 to 80 feet tall in dry sandy, gravelly, and rocky upland soils, and thrives in well-drained lowland sites. Its range is from extreme southern Illinois in a northeastwardly band to southwest Maine, stretching down to N. Carolina.
This specimen shows the shiny dark green upper leaf surface and the light green underleaf. The elliptical leaves are broadest past the middle and have 10 to 16 rounded teeth on each side. The gray bark becomes thick and furrowed. The acorns, which range from 3/4" to 1 1/2" long, are egg-shaped in a deep cup with patterned scales.
