Quercus falcata (Spanish Oak)
Spanish oak or southern red oak griws to 80 feet in dry upland soils of sand and clay loam. It grows from east Texas through Arkansas into extreme southern Illinois, eastward along the southern Ohio River Valley to New Jersey, south to northern Florida and west along the coast to Texas.
The dull green leaves are four to eight inches long and pale green on the underside. They are deeply divided into long, narrow lobes with pointed tips. Bark is dark gray and broadly ridged. The 1/2" acorns are elliptical or rounded, enclosed by a tapered cup with a broad base.
