Quercus ellipsoidales (Northern Pin Oak)
Northern Pin Oak grows from Canada into the western Great Lakes states. It grows to 70 feet tall and 2 1/2 feet in diameter in well-drained dry or moist soils of sand or clay.
The three to five inch long shiny green leaves are deeply divided into five to seven lobes with bristle tips. Leaves turn yellow, brown, or purple in the fall. The bark is dark and smooth to shallowly fisuured. The small (1/2" to 3/4") acorns have a deep cup.
