Quercus bicolor (Swamp White Oak)
This specimen of Swamp White Oak shows the white undersides of the green leaves to which the scientific name refers. Swamp white oak grows from southern Ontario and Maine south to North Carolina then west to Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota. It grows to 70 feet tall in the wet lowland soils, including in swamps and along stream beds.
Leaf shape is obovate, which means oval with the narrow end at the base. The leaf widens out past the middle land the edgges are wavy. Acorns are also oval or egg-shaped (see specimen), form two on a stalk, and are enclosed by a scaly cup.
