Nyssa aquatica (Tupelo Gum)
Tupelo gum is a large aquatic tree that grows seasonally submerged in swamps and flood plains of streams from southern Illinois south to the Gulf Coast and eastward to the southern Atlantic Coast.
The trunk of this tree is swollen at the base; the narrow (to three feet in diameter) trunk can attain 100 feet in height. Shiny, dark green leaves of five to eight inches in length and two to four inches in width are ovate, thick, and sometimes have a few large teeth. The dark brown bark forms scaly ridges. The one-inch purple, sour fruit has a stone with ten wing-like ridges.
