Fraxinus nigra (Black Ash)
This specimen of Black Ash shows a pinnately compound leaf and several clusters of winged seeds.
Black Ash is the northernmost-growing ash tree in the United States. It grows in the far northern section Of Illinois and along the border with Indiana. It grows to 50 feet in wet soils of swamps, peat bogs, and streams.
Leaves are dark green with paler undersides. The pinnately compound leaves are opposite in arrangement. Bark is dark gray with corky plates or scales. Purple flowers are 1/8" long in small clusters. Winged fruits hang in clusters in late summer.
