Cephalanthus occidentalis (Buttonbush)
Buttonbush is a small tree or shrub that grows eastward of a line from Minnesota to Texas, including all of Illinois. It grows in wet soils along streams and lakes.
Leaves are shiny green on the upper surface and lighter and sometimes hairy beneath. Bark is gray or brown and ridged. This specimen shows the 3/4" to 1" round, brown fruits made up of many small nutlets containing two seeds each.
