Celtis occidentalis (Hackberry)
Hackberry trees reach a height of 90 feet and a diameter of three feet. They grow in river valleys and on upland slopes in the northern plains, northern midwest, and northeast.
This specimen shows the long-pointed ovate leaves with uneven sides and saw-toothed margins. Bark is gray or light brown, changing from smooth to scaly. Greenish, 1/8" long male and female flowers are located at the base of young leaves. The fruits are orange-red to purple, stone-seeded, and stalked.
