Carya tomentosa (Mockernut Hickory)
Mockernut hickory grows south of the Great Lakes into New England, and southward to Texas and northern Florida. This tree grows to 80 feet in moist uplands and sometimes in flood plains. This specimen shows the dark yellow-green surface and the lighter undersurface of the lance-shaped leaves (8-20 inches long), which are pinnately compound with seven or nine leaflets. Bark is gray with irregular furrows. The fruit is a rounded nut in a thick husk.
