Carya glabra (Pignut Hickory)
Pignut hickory grows from Texas to Illinois in the west, then eastward to northern Florida to southern Ontario. It grows to 80 feet in dry and moist upland soils. Its common name reflects it being fed to pigs in colonial times.
This specimen shows the three to seven yellow-green lance-shaped saw-toothed leaflets of the pinnately compound leaves. The gray bark has forking ridges. Also shown in this specimen are the pear-shaped nuts in a thin husk.
