Carya cordiformis (Bitternut Hickory)
Bitternut hickory get its common name from the bitter taste of its seed, which is unpalatable to many animals. The tree grows in moist valley soils and on dry upland soils in the eastern half of the United States. It grows throughout Illinois.
Bitternut hickory grows to 80 feet tall with a rounded crown. Bark is gray or light brown and forms narrow, forking ridges. The pinnately compound leaves are six to ten inches long, lance-shaped, and serrated. The upper surface is yellow-green; the undersurface is light green and hairy. Fruits vary from 3/4" to 1 1/4" long, have a thin shell and smooth nut that is inedible.
