Acer saccharum (Sugar Maple)
The sugar maple grows from the eastern edge of the Great Plains to the East Coast as far south as northern Tennessee. it grows to 100 feet tall and three feet in diameter, with a dense, round crown.
The dark green leaves are opposite with five deep lobes that taper to long points. They have five main veins radiating from the base. The leaves turn red, orange, or yellow in fall. The fruit is pairs of winged seeds.
Sugar maple wood is used for furniture and a tree can yield 5-60 gallons of sap per year.
