Acer saccharinum (Silver Maple)
Silver maple grows to 80 feet in wet soils along streams, in flood plains, and in swamps. It ranges from Minnesota eastward to Maine, and stretches south from northwest Florida to eastern Oklahoma. The four to six inch long dull green leaves are opposite on the twigs. The leaf underside is silvery, from which it gets its common name. The gray bark forms shaggy ridges. Flowers are 1/4" long red buds that turn greenish yellow in clusters. Fruits (shown in this specimen)are paired keys with a broad wing.
