Acer rubrum (Red Maple)
Red maples grow from 60 to 90 feet tall in set soils along streams, in valleys, swamps, and uplands. It grows from the Manitoba-Minnesota border east to eastern Newfoundland, south to southern Florida, and west to east Texas. As this specimen shows, leaves are opposite, dull, dark green on the upper surface and lighter on the underside. The thin, gray bark has long scaly ridges. It has tiny, reddish flowers along the twigs. The fruit is about an inch-long paired, key with a long wing. The red maple displays red leaves in several seasons.
