ISM Herbarium : Trees : Maple (Aceraceae)

Acer rubrum var. drummondii (Drummond's Red Maple)
Drummond's red maple is a variety of red maple. Red maple grows from Maine to Florida and west to the Great Plains. In Illinoiss, it grows mainly in the southern third of the state. It grows in wet or moist soils of valleys, swamps, flood plains, and along streams.
Red Maple grows to between 60 and 90 feet in height and its diameter can reach 2 1/2 feet. Its dull green leaves (2 1/2" to 4" long and wide) are opposite. The leaf has three shallow lobes with short points. As this specimen shows, the leaf's sawtooth margins are irregular. The thin bark is gray and smooth, turning into long ridges. The fruits are winged keys formed in pairs.
