ISM Herbarium : Prairie Herbs : Figwort (Scrophulariaceae)

Veronicastrum virginicum (Culver's Root)
This specimen of Culver's Root (named after an early physician) shows the roots and rhizomes. The plant grows to five feet tall in mesic prairies and open savannas. The seraated leaves are about an inch wide and grow to six inches long, and grow in whorls of three to eight at intervals along the stem, decreasing in size toward the top. Flowers are spiky clusters at the top of branches. Each white flower has four or five pointed sepas and a tube-shaped four-lobed corolla. The style and two stamens protrude. The plant blooms in summer.
