Rose (Rosaceae)

ISM Herbarium : Prairie Herbs : Rose (Rosaceae)

Rosa carolina (Pasture Rose)
This specimen of Pasture Rose shows the shrubbiness of the plant with its thorny stems. It grows about two feet tall in dry to mesic prairies and fields. Alternate compound leaves usually have three to seven leaflets with serrated edges. The pink flowers are stalked at the top of the plant. There are five petals, many yellow stamens radiating from the center, and five green pointy sepals, under which form the red fruits called hips. Pasture Rose flowers from midspring through summer.
