Eryngium yuccifolium (Rattlesnake Master)
Rattlesnake Master's common name comes from the folk medicine use in the past as a snake bite remedy. The plant grows in prairies and open rocky savannas. It grows to four feet tall and is characterized by stiff yucca-like leaves and striking white round clusters of timy flowers. The basal leaves shown here are long and narrow. They are host to the larvae of the swallowtail butterfly. Flower heads appear in clusters on stalks in summer. Each individual flower has five white petals and pointy bracts, as well as two thin, protruding styles.
