Desmanthus illinoensis (Illinois Bundle Flower)
This specimen of Illinois Bundle Flower shows clusters of dark brown curved pods. The plant averages three feet tall and is common in disturbed praries and pastures in the western region of the tallgrass prairie. Leaves are alternate and doubly compound. Each leaf consists of branches that are divided into leaflets, each less than 1/4 inch long. White flowers bloom in early-to-mid-summer on round flower heads. Each flower has five white petals and five yellow stamens that extend outward.
